Reasons and Excuses please.
In Alan Knill's post match interview on Tuesday night, when asked about the attendance (about 2200),he said "If you've got a pen, please write in and tell me why you weren't at the match."

I wasn't there and i've written in to tell him why. Anyone else who wasn't there on Tuesday should do the same.

I saw that we had about the lowest attendance of any game that night. Strange given we had 5 straight wins under our belts and were in 3rd place. My excuse is I have a family and get lumbered with looking after my 5 year old when I get back from work. That and I live 250 miles away from Gigg. I get to whatever away games I can, and try to get in a couple of home games when I come up to visit my family in Bury. Do you think BFC does enough to publicise itself and gain the interest of school kids. That's how I got into wanting to watch Bury. As a kid I remember George Jones coming to my school and chatting to us. I then went with a friends dad to see them at Gigg, and saw them beat Southport 4 - 3. Yes it was a long time ago. Does Bishop and co go round the local area visiting youth clubs and schools and stuff? Or are the new generation in Bury just not proud enough of their town to prefer supporting it (even though its in league 2) to supporting Man U from their sofas. I know Bury is a relatively small town with a limited catchment area, but it used to get 4,500 regularly in average times, and I remember gates of 6,000 when we were in old div 3 and doing well. Is it the price? Are we much more expensive now relative to say 20 years ago? Whatever the reasons the new commercial guy at Bury needs to be thinking about how to promote more interest in the club and how to generate a base of support for the future. OK, back to work now I suppose.

I was one of the few who turned up on tuesday and Ive got to say these "fans" who only turn up for the fail game are pathetic...one week a year they pretend to care about bury and league 2, next week they're back to city or united

Id rather they all just piss off back to their armchairs

I don't think there's anyone who just turned up for the Rochdale game and then went back to city or united. To say that shows a fair bit of naivety. I didn't go because i've got a young family to look after and have to go straight from work when we play midweek. I made the sacrifice for the Bradford and Rochdale games but for a match against Macclesfield Town i'm not prepared to do it again.

In fact, here's what I wrote to AK:

Dear Alan,

Further to your comments in your post-match interview on the Tuesday following the Macclesfield game, I am writing to apologise for my absence and to give you an explanation as requested.

Firstly, there’s the financial aspect: £17 to get into the ground plus the fact that I would have to come straight from work and therefore buy a meal in Bury and that’s well over twenty pounds spent for starters. I know its not that much but it soon adds up.

Secondly, my family. I have two young children who need feeding, entertaining, bathing and putting to bed. My wife resents having to do everything herself when I go watching Bury and I need to find a balance between supporting the team and the club and appeasing her indoors. I came to the Bradford and Rochdale games on midweek evenings and that’s my privileges used up for now!

Don’t forget, Alan, that there are seven games in February. Not only that but in this current economic climate that we keep hearing so much about, a lot of people are struggling financially. Furthermore, with so many games postponed and re-arranged for midweek, its just bad luck. I and a lot of people have to pick and choose which games to go to and having spent so much already, a game at home to Macclesfield Town is not a priority.

If I could afford to spend the time and money I would go to every game, home and away like I used to when I was younger and as I will when the children are older. We have five remaining games with 3pm kick-offs against Dagenham, Aldershot, Port Vale, Torquay and Burton and I shall attend all but one of those, being away for the weekend when we play Aldershot. In addition, I’ll probably go to Notts County away and if there’s anything riding on the last away match at Northampton, I’ll be there too offering vocal support, if not financial. So whilst I totally sympathise with your complaints, I would urge you to consider that the supporters of this club have never been large in number but we all love the club and given the right circumstances, as mentioned above, would be here every week.

Finally, the game against Shrewsbury Town has been moved from a Saturday to a Friday night. This is a terrible decision and will end up costing the club money as people like myself, who cannot easily make it for the evening kick offs, will not be there. I would have been there with knobs on had it been played on the Saturday, but Friday night is a definite non-starter.

Keep up the good work Alan. You’re the best thing that has happened to this little football club for many years. Congratulations on the season so far and all the best for the rest of the season and for as long as we are privileged to have you as our manager.

Yours Sincerely,

Nick Holt

Holty that is a superb letter. I hadn't thought of it like that. Can't argue with any of the points you raise at all.
